The woman behind the name - Sybil Ludington (1761-1839)
At sixteen years of age, Sybil Ludington rode forty miles on horseback through a rainy night to warn the American military near Danbury, Connecticut, of an incoming British attack. When an injured messenger arrived at her home with news that the British had discovered unguarded stores, she mounted her horse and rode to warn the four hundred men under her colonel father’s command. Her warning came too late to prevent the town from being burned, but soon enough to assemble the militia and stop further cities from being taken. Her act of bravery stands as a shining example of ordinary people performing extraordinary deeds. Though some question the accuracy of the story, it remains an enduring and inspiring tale.
